October 21, 2004 Super Structure Baby reviewed in the November, 2004 issue of URB.
"The debut LP from Keston and Westdal hit shelves after three years in waiting, a project that blurs lines between electronic, jazz, hiphop, and very atmospheric d'n'b. With Keston on Rhodes keyboard and Westdal on bass, these guys lay down highly polished sounds over intelligent morphing drums. Baby is a thoroughly impressive outing, full of class and sophistication -- just right for unwinding after the party. These are songs you can put on and drift away in, not fall asleep to. Check the quick percussion highlights on 'Batida do Mar' and 'Sunset' for evidence. Overall an exciting, promising effort.

July 23, 2002 Keston and Westdal Reviewed by The Book LA
"Out of the roof of the midwest comes a downtempo act with enough stylistic perks to leave LTJ Bukem wondering why they are not on his Earth compilation series. How John Keston, a british expatriate came to Minneapolis to mingle his Rhodes keyboards with Bay area bass player Nils Westdal and drummer Joshua Herbst may lack mystic and luster, but their project has the backbone of other established electronic jazzheads like Squarepusher and Medesky, Martin and Wood.

The organic feel of Super Structure Baby is owed to its live instrumentation, keeping funk and jazz at the root of its downtempo, drum and bass explorations. Escaping the sometimes repetitive song structure of the genre, intricate themes lead the listener through the moods and cinematic journey of a film noir, from the comfort of a smoky lounge to the grit of abandoned urban landscapes. The laid-back approach to their arrangements demonstrates a remarkable assurance and maturity for such a young act, while the minimalist jazz progressions leave enough space for the music to expand in the listeners mind.
